Pecos residents and visitors will gather on September 19th for the 10th annual Dia del Rio. Families are encouraged to join in the celebration of life along the Pecos River. The day begins at 9:30 with a gathering of volunteers at the Bank of Pecos eager to clean along the banks of the Pecos. After warming up with coffee and pastries, volunteers will disburse to different locations along the Pecos River. Immediately following the trash pick up, volunteers and celebrants are invited to a free barbeque at the Bank of Las Vegas parking lot. The barbeque starts off with a blessing of the river at noon. This is a time for the community to come together to celebrate our river and make a commitment to protecting and honoring it. This year’s fare includes hamburgers made with local beef. T-shirts will be given to the first 100 volunteers. Entertainment will be provided by Danza Azteca, Roberto Mondragon, Julian Prada, Lorain Varela and more! The event is being sponsored by the Upper Pecos Watershed Association (UPWA) and the Pecos Valley Community Foundation.
On behalf of the UPWA and the Dia del Rio Committee we want to thank all of the people who have continued to carry on the Dia del Rio tradition and make it a success.
For more information, contact Lexy or Rachel at the UPWA office at 757-3600, or Janice at 757- 6037.

Pecos Valley Medical Center (PVMC) is pleased to announce that we have moved to electronic medical records and a new elctronic billing and tracking system for medical and ambulance services. There are plans to transition the dental clinic practice from its current electronic system to the same one for better coordination of patient care by 2008. As PVMC becomes increasing electronic and decreses the paper load, practitioners and administrators believe the quality of care and information available to patients will be enhanced and the environment spared so much paper! PVMC hours are Monday - Thursday 8am - 6pm and the medical clinic is open Friday from 8 - noon. The ambulance service is available for emergency services 24/7. |

The Upper Pecos Watershed Association is trying to start a volunteer youth water quality monitoring group for the Pecos River and Cow Creek area. The group will be involved in taking excursions to the river to learn about the watershed, water quality issues, take part in water quality monitoring, and environmental stewardship of the land. The group will also be involved in periodic activities such as fishing and hiking, along with each trip the youth will record their observations and data in field journals. The recorded data will be entered bi-monthly into a watershed database. For more information please feel free to call UPWA office 757-3600 |

First, there will be a Garbage Clean-up on May 19th along Cow Creek Rd. We will be meeting at 9:30 and cleaning the road to Cow Creek road from the pavement up to the campgrounds. We will meet at the intersection of Forest Rd #92 and Forest Rd. #86. (The split to to Cow Creek and Bull Creek.) Any help at any time of the day would be most appreciated. If you have any questions, contact Lanier Watson at 757-2107.
Secondly, I wanted to let everyone know that beginning May 19th, the Forest Service will begin the first phase of their Respect the Rio program. There will be two contact rangers patrolling the canyon on Thursdays-Mondays this summer talking with recreationists about responsible camping and recreation practices including Pack It In, Pack it Out, and Leave No Trace. This is part of the Respect the Rio initiative to educate and empower residents and visitors to the Pecos canyon and to restore parts of the canyon that have been damaged due to overuse. The contact rangers will also be taking an inventory of dispersed campsites in the canyon. If you would like to volunteer in this effort to work with the contact rangers, please contact Rachel at the UPWA office. For more information, see our Spring Newsletter or e-mail rachel_fo@yahoo.com for a copy.
Lastly, UPWA has scheduled their Spring River Clean-up for June 26th. We will meet at the UPWA offices (78 South Main St, Pecos) at 9a.m. and we\'ll have a cookout afterwards for the volunteers. We look forward to seeing you there!
